Not too long ago you were promised a new post which would talk about low growing plants that would work well in the shade.
Dahdah! Welcome to that post…
As Greensboro has become more urban, more and more people have become used to the idea that they can’t plant a tree or shrub that gets to be 40×20′. So, instead they have turned to low growing material that will work in smaller areas.
Of course, they also want to have something that not only is low growing, but looks pretty too. So, with that said, here’s some of our favorite low growing plants.
Sometimes it’s more than just flowers that blossom (at least figuratively), and here at Guilford Garden Center there’s been lots of other stuff going on too.
Of course, if you have been following along you’ll already know about the little test I had to take before I could be approved for US citizenship. Well, that all went great, and Tomorrow (Wednesday 18th) is when I take my Oath of Allegiance and get sworn in as a naturalized US citizen.
Also this week Jean became a first time Grandma. She is super excited about it, and I can’t remember the last time I saw her beaming so much!
She is Grandmother to a beautiful and healthy baby girl and we all join in congratulating her and her Son and Daughter-In-Law on the wonderful addition to their family. She’ll make a great Grandma!
Also, one of our newest additions, Jesse, officially graduated from Guilford College with his 4 year degree in hand. Great job Jesse, we know you worked hard to get it.
So there you have it. Behind the scenes there’s lots of other stuff activity, and it’s always nice to share the good stuff!
Yes, these are all things that are buzzing through my head at this very moment.
I’m hopeful that at this time next week, I’ll be able to say that I have been recommended for US Citizenship by the powers that be at Homeland Security. Before they’ll do that, however, there’s the small matter of an interview.
The interview, I presume, is in part to make sure I’m going to be a good citizen. Last I checked I didn’t even know what Moral Turpitude was, so I’m pretty sure I’ve never committed it, and I’d like to think I am a man of good moral standing.
The other part of the interview, however, is a wee matter of getting asked some civics questions.
From what I understand, there is a pool of 100 questions, from which I will get asked 10 that are chosen at random. Thankfully, I do have the 100 questions printed out at home and have been studying feverishly trying to make sure I know them all.
One in particular sticks in my head:
Q:Name one of the writers of the Federalist papers.
A: Publius
Publius just doesn’t strike me as a name you would find in amongst Lincoln, Washington, and the like, but it is, so it’s stuck in my mind. Of course that also means that will definitely be one question that I will not be asked next Thursday.
The point is, however, if I seem to be a little “off” over the next week or so, you will now know why. While I am saying to you “yes, that shrub will get about 3-4′ tall and is evergreen”, in my head I am probably saying “the constitution was written in 1787 it has 27 amendments there are 435 members in the house woodrow wilson was president during world war 1 Lincoln was in charge during the civil war……….” Phew! Wish me luck.
That is, of course, if you haven’t met them already.
Even if you have, though, we figured they ought to get some kind of quasi-official introduction. So, we settled for making a blog post about it.
Both of them started with us this March, and been as how it’s now the end of April, it looks like they’ll stick around for a while.
She’s a woman of many hats is Anna (including the lovely one she’s adorning in the photo), and has followed a few different paths. One of those paths even trained her to be a Paramedic!
We’re glad that she decided to put that career aside , however, while pursuing her passion for plants.
Anna has worked in and around the Greensboro area establishing and maintaining edible landscapes for clients, as well as working with ornamental crops.
She is now putting that knowledge to use in our retail store handing out advice for all your plant questions.
Jesse just recently graduated from Guilford College with a degree in English (which of course probably means my ramblings may well come under fire for poor grammar and lack of a coherent plot).
While studying there, however, he worked with the landscaping and grounds crews around the college and quickly realized that working with plants was something he really enjoyed doing. In fact he enjoyed it so much he applied for a job at Guilford Garden Center!
Often times you’ll find Jesse delivering to your door, but if he’s not doing that he’ll be happy to help you with whatever needs you might have in our store.
