Are you ready for Spring? We certainly are here at the garden center. Maybe your ready, but you just don’t know what direction to go with your yard and garden. Well, we decided to compile a little list of places you can check out to get yourself inspired. Hopefully they’ll help you get lots of ideas for the coming season.

Planting Plans

The first site that’s worth checking out is Better Homes and Gardens garden plans. They have a multitude of different plans to choose from, everything from easy-care plans to dramatic gardens, and everything in between.

Some personal favorites:

Corner Garden :: Nice and bright, with extended season interest

Drought Resistant Garden :: We love it when we see drought resistant plans. They’re important around here.

Shady Border Plan :: Very elegantly layed out shade garden plan

Looking for some ideas for your Spring containers, rather than planting beds? Look no further than Proven Winners container recipes. The ideas that you can find on this site are all stunning, and there’s something for every taste and planting scenario.

Some personal favorites:

A taste of the tropics :: It looks tropical, need we say more.

Charmed Oxalis :: A very simple idea, done to great effectiveness.

Dress To Impress :: A very elegant look that will last through the seasons.

Display Gardens

Most of the display and show gardens that appear at the Chelsea flower show are a little much for the average home garden, but what we can do, however, is take some ideas from elements of these gardens to use in our own spaces.

Of course even if you don’t use any of these ideas, they’re still very pretty to look at.

A little more down to earth, but still with some awesome ideas for inspiration is the American Horticutural Society’s River Farm gardens. A lot of what they do at this location can quite easily be used in your own natural areas. Beautiful.

Local Inspiration

Of course looking at photos is one thing, but it’s pretty easy to get inspired right here in Greensboro, here’s a couple of places to visit once the weather breaks to get some more ideas:

The Bicentennial Garden :: A showcase of what can be grown to great effect right here in the Piedmont can be found at the Bicentennial Garden. The planting combinations that can be found are absolutely beautiful.

Bald Eagle Trail :: We are blessed in Greensboro and surrounding areas to have a multitude of trails to explore, and Bald Eagle is just one of many. Being this close to nature, if you don’t feel refreshed and inspired then perhaps all hope is lost!

The Greensboro Arboretum :: The arboretum, by it’s very nature, of course has some great specimen trees. If you’re trying to decide on a tree for your yard this place is a great starting point. It also has other seasonal displays that are sure to catch your eye.

North Carolina Botanical Gardens :: Willing to travel just a little further afield than Greensboro? Why not pay the North Carolina Botanical Gardens a visit. Situated in Chapel Hill, the UNC gardens are a true delight for any garden enthusiast. They have all sorts of themed display gardens, as well as an expansive arboretum.

The North Carolina Arboretum :: Another great alternative is to head up to the mountains, and visit the NC Arboretum in Asheville. Again, this place has some awesome display gardens. Also, if you want to see how a bonsai is really done, this’ll give you some ideas!

So there you go, some ideas to get your creative juices flowing. Is there something you think we missed that should have been included? Let us know.

The world of organics has become very muddied in recent years, and it seems every item you buy nowadays has some kind of tag touting how ecologically sound it is. Well, we all know that not everything is organic, so let’s see if we can clear up at least some of it.

Let’s start with certifications.
There are several different certifying bodies, but only two matter as far as we are concerned (pretty much because we trust what they say)

USDA certified – This certification is used mainly for plant material which has been produced using verifiable organic practices, and is administered under the USDA’s National Organic Program (NOP). Growers who wish to receive this certification must adhere to strict standards regarding the use of pesticides and fertilizers to be approved.
The supplier for our organic line of herbs and vegetables has managed to achieve this certification, and we also carry several seeds which carry this certification.
This year has also seen the introduction of pesticides which have been certified under the same program, and we expect to see more of this in the months and years to come.

OMRI Listed – The Organic Materials Review Institute conducts independent tests of products which are going to be used for organic growing. These are the products that growers would use to ensure they stay USDA certified! <acronym="Organic Materials Review Institute">OMRI is a non-profit organization.
Some examples of <acronym="Organic Materials Review Institute">OMRI listed products would be:

Multi Bloom fertilizer from Country Select

Sluggo from Monterey

Organicide from Organic Laboratories

So if I don’t see either of these certifying bodies on the product does that mean they’re not organic?
Well no, not necessarily. It just means you may want to check the ingredients carefully. Unfortunately many companies have jumped on the organic bandwagon and are being a little unscrupulous about their product markings. There are many more, however, who have a genuine organic product but have chosen not to list it with either of the bodies we mentioned above.

Generally speaking, if a product contains naturally derived ingredients it can be considered organic. A good example of this would be a potting mix that uses poultry manure as it’s fertilizer rather than a synthetic fertilizer. There are also products which contain naturally occurring elements, such as rock phosphate, and these too could be considered organic.
Animal by-products are also, for the most part, considered organic (eg. blood meal and bone meal), though some would argue that they really shouldn’t be considered in such a light.

Of course the best bit of news out of all of the hype surrounding organic products is that increased competition has spurred manufacturers on to produce more effective products. These days there is an organic alternative for just about everything, and if that’s the direction you want to take it’s a much easier task to accomplish than it used to be.

Hopefully that’s cleared things up at least a little, but if you now have more questions than you do answers, ask away and we’ll try to address them.

On Friday 15th January a couple of us made our annual “trek” around the Green and Growing show right here in Greensboro, NC.
Here’s a couple of highlights:

First, a couple of vendors who we have done business with in the past, and will continue to this year.

Gossett's Nursery

Gossett’s Nursery

Gossett’s is a local nursery based right here in Greensboro, and they always have high quality plant material for us.

Many of our compact Hollies come from Gossetts, as well as many of our other shrubs and trees.

You can tell from the booth display that these guys pride themselves on the kind of plant material they produce!

Pender Nursery

Pender Nursery

Pender Nursery

This is the nursery that we get our Encore Azaleas from. Again, a nursery that gives you a pretty good idea of the kind of quality you can expect just by looking at the plant material in their booth.

Talking of Encore Azaleas, we discovered while talking to our Pender rep that there is a new Encore introduction this year called Encore Lilac. We’re quite excited about seeing this one. Check out the link to see what a beautiful color it is!

Riverbend Nursery

Jeepers Creepers Plants

Riverbend Nursery

This nursery does an astounding job with perennials, and a great majority of the perennials we get comes from them

They have introduced a new line this year called “Jeepers Creepers” which we are considering carrying in the store.

They are basically low growing, ground cover type perennials which are perfect for rock gardens, containers, between pavers, etc.
There’s a great selection to choose from, and of course with a mascot like that cute ladybug they’re hard to resist!

<div class="clear"

There are another couple of items of interest that we’ll be looking further into this week, so we’ll keep you posted on that once we get a little more info. Needless to say that it’s plant material which we think looks quite exciting. Watch this space!

Winter doesn’t leave much for the gardener to do outside, but it does serve us with an opportunity to plan for the warmer months to come, and here at the garden center we are doing the exact same thing!
We have to contemplate in the next couple of months where we are going to place any new products that we get in to make sure that they are shown at their best.
How about a sneak preview of some of the items we’re hoping to get this year so you can be first in line when they arrive at the store!

All In One Bucket

All in 1 bucket

The All In One Bucket is kinda like a bucket on steroids! It has a nice, tall, handle and a wheel base so that it can easily be transported around your home and yard

The promotional image gives you some ideas of what you could use this thing for, but we’re sure you could probably come up with plenty more all on your own!
Maybe pulling bags of bird seed? Or perhaps carrying your hose to the veggie garden? Or taking the leaves to the compost pile? You get the idea…

Two New Gardenias

It’s what we’ve been coveting for many years, a double blooming Gardenia that will not just survive, but thrive in our area, and now, it seems, we not only finally have one, but we actually have choices!

Gardenia augusta 'Crown Jewel'

The first of these Gardenias is ‘Crown Jewel’. This variety is a dwarf form, only growing to about two feet tall, but with a spread of about four to five feet.
These characteristics make it ideal for bordering natural areas, in mixed plantings, and also for use in mixed containers.

‘Crown Jewel’ is hardy to zone 7 (yup, that’s the zone the Piedmont Triad resides in folks) and will bloom heavily in Mid-Summer.
It prefers some afternoon shade in our region, but otherwise is pretty easy to manage.

Gardenia jasminoides 'Summer Snow'

The second Gardenia of interest this year is a variety called ‘Summer Snow’

‘Summer Snow’ is another double blooming variety, but this one will get to a bigger size. Average mature size on this particular variety is going to be about five feet tall, and four feet wide, so a substantial addition to any landscape.

‘Summer Snow’ is hardy all the way down to zone 6, so it is going to fair extremely well in our positively balmy zone 7!
It’s preferred site is in a location that gets some nice shade during the afternoon to stop it’s leaves from burning up, and if treated correctly will give gorgeous, large, and fragrant blooms in the Summer months.

What makes this particular variety even more interesting, however, is that it’s been produced by one of our local growers right down the road in Browns Summit!

Coles Blazing Hot Blend

Blazing Hot Seed

The war against squirrels rages on, and the people at Coles Wild Bird understand this, which is why they continue to improve upon their anti-squirrel products, and bring in new introductions to combat their wily ways.

Blazing Hot Blend is a great mixture of seeds that birds really love:

Black Oil Sunflower

Sunflower Meats

White Proso Millet

Cracked Corn

Safflower Oil

Added to this mix, however, is liquid Habanero peppers. Woooh that’s some hot stuff!
Of course the birds don’t care, but the squirrels absolutely detest it! Pour some in your feeder and stand back and watch the show. Oh yeah, and you don’t need to wait for this item, it’s already arrived!

Easy Change Doormats

Easy Change Doormat

These doormats are decorative rubber material with a nice, thick, coir insert (Coir is made from coconut husks, so not only is it tough, but it’s also a sustainable material, we like that!) which lasts and wears well outdoors.

Well, whoopdedoo, I hear you say, that’s great but nothing terribly exciting. You’re correct. What does make them exciting, however, or at least as exciting as doormats can get, is the fact that they have an interchangeable insert so you can give your doorway a different look depending on the season, the weather, the holiday, your mood, etc.

Each assembled mat measures about 18×29″, so is plenty big enough for most situations.
The inserts are sold seperately, so you don’t need to worry about buying the whole ensemble every time you want to change the look.

Of course that’s just a wee sampling of the new items we’ll be carrying this year. If you know us at all, you know why like to put little surprises in every corner of the store! So just come on by and see what we have in the store, you never know what you might find.

Winter time is a great time of year to enjoy some backyard birding.

Firstly, because there is a bigger lack of natural resources at this time of year birds are more apt to search out feeders for supplemental nutrition.

Also, because a lot more shrubs and trees have lost their foliage, it is much easier to look at and enjoy all those backyard visitors.

Having said that, we thought you might like to know what some of the birds are that you are looking at. So here’s a short list of some of the more common ones you are likely to see at your feeder at this time of year.

Northern Cardinal - Cardinalis cardinalis

Northern Cardinal – The Northern Cardinal is prevalent throughout the Carolinas throughout the year, and the male is easily spotted by it’s bright red feathers. The female has more of a tan colored appearance, but still has the distinctive bright orange beak.

Chickadee - Poecile atricapillus

Black Capped Chickadee – The Black Capped Chickadee is a small, sparrow sized bird, that gets it’s name from the sweet song it sings.

Chickadees are pretty brave birds, and with some patience can be “trained” to eat from your hand. They will usually be seen grabbing a seed and taking off with it to de-shell and eat it, and then returning for another one.

Tufted Titmouse - Baeolophus bicolor

Tufted Titmouse – Usually whenever there are Chickadees in site there will also be Tufted Titmice. These two birds love to hang out together!!

Of course the most distinguishing feature of this bird is, surprise surprise, the tuft that sticks up on the top of their head. Their bodies are a fairly dark gray on top and much paler underneath.

Titmice behave the same way with seed as Chickadees do, taking a seed and holding it between their feet to crack it open. It’s a good show to watch if you get the chance.

Dark-Eyed Junco - Junco hyemalis

Dark Eyed Junco – The Dark Eyed Junco is only seen in the Piedmont during the Winter time, when it travels down from the colder regions of the country to pay us a visit.

This bird is a ground feeder, and can usually be seen picking up a lot of the seed that other birds have kicked out of the feeder.

Juncos have a beautiful two-tone appearance, with buff grey upper bodies, and much lighter underneath. The seperation between upper and lower markings is quite distinctive, and almost seems as if it’s been painted on.

Carolina Wren - Thryothorus ludovicianus

Carolina Wren – The Carolina Wren is a beautiful little bird which can be seen throughout our region throughout the year, but is more apt to come to feeders in the Winter months, especially if you put out some nice suet for them!

This bird is notorious for living and nesting in pretty much any cavity it comes across, so don’t be surprised if, once you have attracted some, you see them nesting somewhere nearby later in the year.

The most distinctive feature on these birds is probably their flattened looking tail.

Red-Bellied Woodpecker - Melanerpes carolinus

Woodpeckers – There are a few different types of woodpecker which will visit feeders in our region, though they are definitely more commonly seen during the Winter months.

The Red Bellied Woodpecker (pictured) is a moderate sized Woodpecker, and the male especially has a beautiful bright red head.

Why is it that they are called red-bellied when the majority of red is actually on their head? Don’t have a clue!! If anyone knows the answer to that, please leave a comment, the author would love to know

Downy woodpeckers are also quite commonly seen in our backyard, and are identified by their beautiful black and gray banding. Downies are much smaller than red bellied.

Pileated Woodpeckers will also sometimes be seen, though much more seldomly in the yard. They are the largest of the Woodpeckers, and have a beautiful bright red crown.

White Throated Sparrow - Zonotrichia albicollis

Sparrows – There are several types of Sparrow in the Carolinas, and all of them will be happy to come eat at your house if you’ll allow them too.

Sparrows are similar in size and body shape, but their markings are quite different once you begin to study them a little more closely. The White-throated Sparrow(pictured), House Sparrow, Chipping Sparrow, Wood Sparrow, and others, are all common throughout the area.

Sparrows will feed on the ground as well as on platform feeders, and will also feed out of special Nijer feeders.

Norhtern Mockingbird - Mimus polyglottos

Northern Mockingbird – The Northern Mockingbird gets it’s deserving name from the fact that it can, quite literally, mock and mimic many different sounds. It is a fairly large bird, and is actually seen more often around the vicinity of a feeder rather than actaully eating at the feeder. In fact, if you just so happen to have a Pyracantha in your yard it’s pretty much gauranteed you’ll have a Mockingbird eating it’s berries!

So there you have it, the more common birds in our area. Of course there are many many more different birds to see than just those listed here, but the ones in this article are definitely pretty prevalent throughout the Piedmont.

If you see one at your feeder that you’re not sure about try to get a photo to show us, or at least a good description, and we’ll try our best to let you know what it is, and what it’s preferred food type is.

Pretty much every year you tend to find the same thing when it comes to Poinsettias. A whole bunch of varieties get touted, but a lot of them look pretty much like all the others.

We try our best here at the garden center not to overwhelm you with hundreds of choices, but rather just have in stock the varieties which we, and our grower, think are the best.

Here’s a little sample of some of the varieties we are carrying in the store this year, there’s sure to be one that you’ll enjoy.

‘Ice Punch’
This is the first year that we have carried this variety. It has a nice, strong, central tone which has a subtle pink coloration which lightens to a whiter color as the season progresses. This is a great variety to use if you are looking for something a little bit different, but that still gives a nod to traditional Poinsettia colors.

‘Freedom Peppermint’
My favorite Poinsettia used to be a variety called ‘Monet’, but the problem was that it colored up so late in the season that Christmas was just about done by the time it looked it’s best!

Well, luckily for me, there’s a variety on the market now called ‘Freedom Peppermint’ which has two things going for it which makes it my new favorite
First of all, the color on this variety is a lot more consistent than on ‘Monet’. The speckled pattern is more evenly distributed, and the tonal varieations are a lot more pleasing to the eye.
Also, as with all the varieties in the Freedom series, ‘Peppermint’ comes in much earlier, meaning it can be enjoyed through the whole holiday season, rather than just toward the end.

‘Winter Rose’
Here’s another one with a little different look.

‘Winter Rose’ has actually been on the market for quite a few years, but it continues to be a popular one among those who want a traditional color, with a contemporary look. This variety definitely fits the bill in that regard!

The beautiful red tones definitely shout loudly about what season they belong to, but at the same time the loosely curled bracts add an air of contemporary flair that looks great in a variety of settings

Chianti
This is by far my favorite red Poinsettia!
Not only does this variety have the most incredible deep red, but it also has a great oak leaf shape to the bracts, adding a touch of elegance and sophistication.
This particular variety tends to stay nice and full and compact, so it would make a really good choice for a centerpiece.

‘Chianti’ comes in a little later than most other reds, (though not so late that it’s too late!) so your best time to look for it is usually about mid-month.

‘Shimmer Surprise’
Another nicely variegated variety, ‘Shimmer Surprise is often called ‘Jingle Bells’, but it differes from that variety in a couple of ways:
Firstly, the bract colors have a bigger color range on them, and will have some pink and yellow splashes as well as the creamy colored speckles associated with this type of Poinsettia.
Also, because this is an improved variety, color tends to come in earlier and more consistently, and also shows better disease resistance than the ‘Jingle Bells’ of old.

Of course it’s tough to break old habits, so if you hear us calling it Jingle Bells, then you’ll know why!

<div class="clear"

‘Fireworks’
Here’s another really nice red variety. This one is one of the earlier reds, so is of course available a little earlier in the season.

One really nice facet of ‘Fireworks’ that really can’t be seen in the picture is the nice dark veining that the younger bracts take on. While they are not a prominent feature of the plant, they add a nice subtle difference that gives it a little uniqueness without being overwhelmingly so.

Of course we also have traditional Red, White, and Marble available too. We promise we haven’t left those out!

The sizes we have available go from 4″ up to 10″, and we can wrap and bow all sizes as well as add glitter sticks to them. Be forewarned, however, we do not and will not carry fake looking spray painted poinsettias!!

So at some point on most days somebody in the store finally gets around to having a glance at the paper to see what, if anything, is happening that we need to be aware of. Usually it’s to see if somebody has talked about a plant that we don’t have in stock!
Last week, however, Go Triad had the yearly Reader’s Choice awards and lo and behold Guilford Garden Center had an honorable mention in there!
So, to those of you who voted for us, we would just like to say thank you, we appreciate it. It sure is nice to know that someone out there thinks we’re doing a good job!
