It's Looking Like a Garden Center around here!

Display box at the greenhouse entrance

Finally, we have a full house! We were beginning to wonder if the weather was ever going to cooperate, and it’s still not really, but oh well, such is life.
Over the last week or two we’ve been getting really well stocked with beautiful plants despite the curve balls mother nature has been throwing us (we needed a little reminder about when exactly our last frost date is apparently), and the place is looking better than ever.
Anyway, here’s a little tour of our small patch to show you how things are looking.

We start at the greenhouse entrance, with a display box highlighting some of the pretty stuff we have on offer. We didn’t have that there last year, it’s yet another remnant from our pond selling days that we converted into a planter.

You can see a couple of our Azaleas in full bloom in there, as well as some Ever-Red Loropetalum – a fairly new introduction which boasts burgundy foliage and a red bloom in Early Spring.

lots of color in the greenhouse

lots of color in the greenhouse

Our greenhouse has gotten nice and full over the last couple of weeks too, let’s have a peek in there next

Hanging baskets in a multitude of colors, sun annuals, shade annuals, flowers, foliage, grasses, the list goes on. It’s just so nice to see this place full of color again after what seemed like such a long Winter. Of course it’s that time of year now when we’ll be getting new shipments every week, so all this lovely colorful stuff will stay nice and fresh.

great fern selection

We also keep all our shade perennials in the greenhouse to give them some protection from the hot afternoon sun. We got some really pretty ferns in this week.

There were a couple of varieties of painted fern that I have never seen before (I’m not very good with perennials, so just because I’ve never seen them before doesn’t necessarily mean they’re a new variety!) from the Plants That Work in the Shade series of perennials. Some other absolutely beautiful stuff from that series came in too.

double knockout & double knockout pink

We have another couple of display boxes close to the entrance to our store, and right now we have a sampling of our newly arrived Double Knockout Roses in there. In the forefront is the Double Pink Knockout which was introduced to the world at large last year. Thankfully we managed to get our hands on a few more this year than we did last year. They were gone the first week we had them in the store last year! We’re hoping we can keep some in stock for a little longer than that this year.

Behind the Pinks are the Double Knockouts, which have been around for a few years now but still remain extremely popular. Of course when you see them like this it’s easy to see why. Who wouldn’t love a Rose that looks this nice but is resistant to disease?

perennial tables

Even our Perennial tables are just about at capacity, with all sorts of gorgeous material to peruse.

Not too many of the Perennials are showing color yet, but they are looking nice and healthy, and a lot of them have some nice fat buds! All the rain we have been getting is certainly helping in that regard. Of course we’re sure a few days of sunshine and those buds will be starting to pop open in no time at all!

vegetables

Around the back of the greenhouse is where you’ll find our selection of vegetables.

From heirloom varieties to modern, disease resistant hybrids, and from starter peat-pots to 6″ plants, we like to think we have a pretty good selection to pick from. We have all kinds of tomatoes and peppers, as well as squash, zucchini, egg plant, watermelons, and okra. Something for everyone. Of course we’ll be sure to put a few in our own little vegetable garden too!

In the background, by the way, is where our Blueberries and fruit trees are. The Apples and Pears had some lovely blooms on them last week.

Azaleas in bloom

Azaleas in bloom

Our Azaleas are starting to sell down pretty quickly now that they are blooming all over town, but we still have a nice selection to choose from. Don’t they look amazing when they’re all blooming together!

In the foreground is ‘Hershey Red’, and behind that are the ‘Coral Bells’. The one in the background is “Hino De Giri’. I love the look of those Hersheys and Coral Bells together.

Hydrangea selection

We also got a super selection of Hydrangeas in this week. Of course none of these have started blooming yet, but it shouldn’t be too much longer before that starts to happen.

We got some really interesting looking varieties this year. The two I’m personally looking forward to seeing bloom are ‘Pinky Winky’, which gets a long bloom on it that starts out pink then fades to white, which creates a kind of two-tone effect on the bloom, and ‘Twist ‘N Shout’, the newest addition to the “Endless Summer” series. This one, however, has lacecap type blooms rather than the usual mopheads. Sounds pretty neat huh? There’s some other neat looking ones too, those two are just my personal favorites.

Well, that concludes the tour for today folks, hope you enjoyed the ride, and please come again!

Oh my gosh!! How fantastic. I have got to get over there next week, maybe even Saturday. It all looks healthy and the variety is superb. I’ve not seen such a good selection of PW hydrangeas in a long time.

It has been cool but that just means better planting weather and don’t you love the rain! My new gardens are starting to take hold.

Those hanging baskets are sure a sight. They are lush and I know that double purple smells like heaven.

    Well come on by Anna!
Yeah, the cool weather seems to be persistent this year, but the rain sure is good.
We’re very lucky in our area with the growers we have, they all do a fantastic job on their products, makes it much easier for us!
I can’t wait for the Hydrangeas to start blooming, you might also be interested in Lo and Behold Buddleia which we’re hoping to get in in the next week or two. It’s a good one for containers.
