Over the last few weeks we have seen the price of oil come down substantially, which has in turn lead to cheaper gas prices, and it would seem that bird seed pricing has followed.
Bird seed is of course a commodity just like any other seed or grain, and prices are constantly fluctuating, but luckily because of our partnership with Wyatt Quarles we generally manage to keep our prices relatively steady. This past week, however, we got a shock when we saw the latest pricing table. Pricing had dropped dramatically for almost every category of bird seed!
It’s not too often we get to actually lower our prices so substantially on an item, but we were only too glad to pass on such a nice decrease, especially with the cold Winter weather rapidly approaching.
So what can we attribute this sudden shift in pricing to? Well, we suspect the major reason is simply that seed growers had a bumper crop this year, leading to a surplus in the market.
Other factors that might be affecting the prices include the steady decline in fuel costs. We are all aware how much of the industry is effected by fuel costs. It’s also possible that Frito-Lay isn’t buying up as much Sunflower seed as everybody feared they would.
Of course the bottom line is, does anybody really care what the reasoning is, it’s just great to actually talk about decreasing prices for a change!
